The twin impact of the advances in technology and developments in data mining on auditing is not trivial. The automation of operations and digitalisation of data have changed the collection and storage of data, as well as the nature of data. While descriptive analytics (visualisation and dashboards) is now common in auditing, the potential application of diagnostic and predictive analytics in auditing cannot be ignored. Data mining has provided valuable additions to the auditor’s toolbox – beyond statistics (such as audit sampling or regression analysis).
This talk explores the intersection of technology, data mining and auditing. While data mining (or data analytics) has frequently been touted as the future of auditing, there is still a lack for clarity in the area. With a focus on internal auditing, and through illustrations using visualisation, association and clustering, as well as predictive modelling, the talk provides participants with perspectives of data mining and its potential application in auditing – using an intuitive and non-mathematical approach.
