Event Overview:

Synopsis

You might one day need to be a whistleblower. On 26 March 2019, two whistleblowers were awarded US$50 million as they provided information that helped the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) win a US$267 million settlement with JP Morgan Chase & Co. over claims that the bank failed to inform wealthy clients of conflicts of interest in managing their money.

“Blowing the whistle is rarely easy, and it certainly hasn’t been for my client, but this historic SEC whistleblower award and related enforcement action reaffirms that doing the right thing pays,” Jordan Thomas, the whistleblower lawyer, said in a statement. Thomas said his client is a JPMorgan executive.

“Whistleblowers like those being awarded today may be the source of ‘smoking gun’ evidence and indispensable assistance that strengthens the agency’s ability to protect investors and the capital markets,” said Jane Norberg, chief of the SEC’s whistleblower office.

Due to overwhelming response for the Learn at Lunch on 9 May 2019, IIA Singapore is pleased to organise another run of this fun and captivating Learn at Lunch talk which will trace the contrasting tales of whistleblowers and hopefully prepare you before you blow the whistle.

The Speaker will present some mind-blowing real-life illustrations, short case examples with role plays, fun facts and ethical dilemmas faced by employees to help reinforce the learning concepts and outcomes.

You will gain some first-hand knowledge and insights into:

1. Sherron Watkins vs Enron - The Fraud that Woke Up the World;
2. Matthew Lee vs Lehman Brothers – The World’s Record Holder in Bankruptcy; and
3. Harry Markopolos vs Bernie Madoff – The World’s Largest Swindler.

The talk will conclude with a fun quiz ‘Who Wants to be a Whistleblower’.

All participants will receive 1 CPE hour in Ethics.

Note: This talk is similar to the session conducted by Mr Sarjit Singh on 9 May 2019. Please note that if you have already attended the previous session, only one CPE hour may be reported for subsequent attendance of the same presentation.
