Synopsis

Internal auditors ranked GDPR compliance as a top priority in the run up to 25th May 2018: knowing that penalties under the GDPR can amount to 4% of global annual turnover, many heads of internal audit are including a review of this area within their annual internal audit plans. As a function which has a holistic view of the organisation, internal audit plays a role in evaluating the organisation’s GDPR compliance. By taking up the role of strategic partner of the DPO, internal auditors can help to guide the company strategy, raise awareness, assess the potential risks, identify gaps, incorporate changes to mitigate the GDPR risks and test the remediated procedures. Once the regulation takes effect, internal audit will play a pivotal role in testing the compliance framework and the timely reporting of data breaches.
