CAE Roundtable Discussion

On 23 April 2025, 28 Chief Audit Executives and internal audit leaders from a wide range of industries across both the private and public sectors gathered at The Westin Singapore for a roundtable discussion organised by IIA Singapore in partnership with Diligent. Centred on the IIA’s Internal Audit: Vision 2035 initiative, the session explored how the role of internal audit is expected to evolve over the next decade.

The event kicked off with a presentation by Richard Dyason, Executive Director at IIA Singapore, on Vision 2035, which outlines a bold, aspirational roadmap for the future of the profession. The initiative aims to shape how internal auditors anticipate and respond to emerging risks, innovate their approaches, and increase their impact within organisations.

Technology emerged as a key driver of change. As AI, machine learning and data analytics become increasingly embedded in business processes, participants agreed that internal auditors will need to harness these tools to deliver timely and meaningful insights from complex data sets. This shift also raises the bar on skillsets. Whether seasoned professionals or early-career auditors, practitioners will be expected to keep pace with digital tools and adapt to new and emerging risks.

Beyond technology, the nature of internal audit itself is evolving. While assurance continues to be a fundamental aspect, many organisations are seeking more from their internal audit functions, particularly in the form of strategic advice. A more balanced approach that incorporates both assurance and advisory services is gaining ground.

Nonetheless, challenges remain. Several participants noted the need for internal audit to be better understood and supported within organisations. Strengthening relationships with stakeholders, clearly communicating value, and aligning with business priorities were seen as essential steps in enhancing the function’s relevance and impact.

The roundtable provided a valuable opportunity not only to exchange insights, but also to network with peers across industries and sectors. As the profession looks ahead to 2035, such conversations will be vital in shaping a more resilient, forward-looking internal audit function.
