Fostering the Next Generation of Internal Audit Professionals

Internal audit continues to offer a dynamic and rewarding career, providing professionals with opportunities to develop critical thinking, data analytics capabilities, and strong communication skills. As part of IIA Singapore’s ongoing efforts to build a robust talent pipeline, a panel discussion was organised in collaboration with the School of Accountancy at Singapore Management University (SMU) on 28 March 2025. The event offered students valuable insights into the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the field of internal audit.

Three internal audit professionals from both the public and private sectors – Cheung Fang Ting from Barclays, Gareth Lee from PwC Singapore, and Jasmine Lim from the Accountant-General’s Department - shared their experiences and perspectives on entering and thriving in the profession. Vithiya Laxmi moderated the session, guiding the discussion on key skills critical to success in internal audit, including professional scepticism, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

The panellists also provided practical insights on common challenges faced by internal auditors. These included managing audit fatigue, bridging communication gaps with operational teams, and handling difficult conversations with confidence. Their candid reflections helped students gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of the profession and its role in enhancing organisational governance and risk management.

A key takeaway from the session was the critical role of continuous upskilling in maintaining a competitive edge in the evolving field of internal audit. While career paths in internal audit may differ, the panel stressed that staying relevant requires ongoing learning and the development of new skills. Professional certifications were highlighted as valuable tools in this process, not only for enhancing an internal auditor’s knowledge and credibility but also for keeping pace with industry changes.

Special thanks to Professor Chua Wan Rong who played a key role in facilitating the opportunity for students to engage with industry professionals, furthering efforts to advance the internal audit profession and provide valuable learning experiences for the next generation.
