A Journey of Growth: Reflecting on Honorary Membership

On 18 October 2023, coinciding with The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Singapore's 47th Annual General Meeting, I found myself humbled and honoured to be granted the title of Honorary Membership by IIA Singapore. As I sit down to reflect on this recognition, memories flood back, painting a picture of the meaningful journey I have had with IIA Singapore.

A Quiet Beginning

Back in 2004, IIA Singapore was a small family with just two members. I vividly remember the day I went to collect my Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certificate – a small office in Republic Plaza, almost hidden. It's funny how life unfolds; that tiny space has now expanded into an office accommodating 11 staff and a training room. A quiet progression, owed to the tireless efforts of Past Presidents and Boards of Governors.

My Quarter-Century Career Reflection

In 2004, I started my career as a young auditor with a decade of experience, viewing it as a four-quarter National Basketball Association game. Fast forward, and here I am, entering the final quarter of my career, shaped by both the professional and personal growth experienced along the way.

A Journey of Personal Involvement

My journey with IIA Singapore took a more active turn when I embraced the role of a trainer for CIA courses. The decision to volunteer for the Board of Governors in 2013 and later serve as Vice President until 2019 was driven by a passion for training and a desire to contribute to the development of aspiring internal auditors. Additionally, I had the privilege of contributing to the development of the existing Standards and Implementation Guidance as a member of The IIA International Internal Audit Standards Board.

Reflection on Four Key Insights

(1) Gaining More in Serving

Serving the profession has been a profound learning experience. Beyond deepening my understanding of the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF), it has enriched my insights into the spirit of audit standards, making me a more competent trainer and practitioner.

(2) Squeezing Time to Serve

Contrary to my initial concerns about finding time, the experience has proven that with improved time management skills, one can navigate the responsibilities without undue stress. Lesson learned: where there's a will, there's a way.

(3) Taking the First Step

Initiating involvement need not be overwhelming. Actively participating in IIA Singapore’s activities and expressing constructive views is a simple yet effective way for individuals to position themselves for impactful service to the profession.

(4) Meeting Like-minded People

The journey with IIA Singapore has connected me with a remarkable network of like-minded professionals who are now cherished friends and advisors. For instance, my research ideas sprouted from discussions with IIA Singapore's former executive director, leading to my doctoral dissertation. Their guidance has profoundly influenced both my professional and personal choices.

While much has changed for both IIA Singapore and me, one thing that has consistently impressed me is the enduring friendliness of IIA Singapore staff across different eras. They were helpful and friendly when I first approached them in 2004, and this standard of friendliness remained unchanged through the years whenever I approached them. The culture of serving with hearts has stood the test of time at IIA Singapore. Every time I attended seminars, meetings, or events organised by IIA Singapore, I left as a contented individual. I have truly relished my journey with IIA Singapore and consider myself blessed to have been given the opportunity to be its member. I sincerely hope that many internal audit professionals can experience the same sense of fulfillment.

Dr Sia Nam Chie started his career as an auditor before transitioning to work in risk management, legal, compliance, and operations. He served as a Board of Governor for The Institute of Internal Auditors Singapore from 2013 to 2019 and as a member of The IIA International Internal Audit Standards Board from 2016 to 2018.
