My Journey in Internal Audit and Leadership at IIA Singapore

Entering the world of internal audit was not a result of meticulous career planning but rather emerged from curiosity, a love for problem-solving, and a dedication to integrity in the business world. Looking back on my journey, the excitement of uncovering hidden insights and continuous learning drew me into this field.

My professional identity has been shaped by several key moments. Leading a complex audit project early in my career was a defining experience, teaching me the importance of detailed scrutiny balanced with strategic vision. This not only refined my skills but also deepened my understanding of internal auditing nuances.

Joining The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Singapore marked a turning point. Here, I found a platform not only to apply my expertise but also to influence and shape the future of internal auditing in Singapore. As the current President of IIA Singapore, my goal is to foster a community of internal auditors who are not just skilled but also ethical leaders.

What fuels my passion for internal audit is its multifaceted nature – it is like being a detective, a consultant, and a strategist, all rolled into one. The most rewarding part is seeing the tangible impact of our work in guiding organisations towards better governance and ethical practices.

An anecdote that stands out is an audit that uncovered a significant process inefficiency. Addressing this not only saved the company money but also improved employee morale, reaffirming my belief in the power of internal audit to bring about meaningful change.

The landscape of internal auditing has evolved dramatically, influenced by changing methodologies, emerging technologies, and a dynamic business environment. Embracing these changes has required adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning.

Of particular significance in recent years is the growing emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Governance factors. This shift aligns with my values, highlighting the role of internal audit in promoting sustainable and ethical business practices.

My leadership philosophy is rooted in empathy, integrity, and empowerment. Effective leadership in internal auditing involves creating an environment where team members feel valued and are encouraged to contribute their unique perspectives.

One instance that showcases the positive impact of this approach was during a critical compliance project. By empowering the team and fostering open communication, we not only achieved our objectives but also built a stronger, more cohesive team.

Away from spreadsheets and audit reports, I indulge in photography. This hobby offers me a different lens through which to view the world. Capturing moments, whether in nature or urban landscapes, provides a creative counterbalance to my professional life – a practice in patience, attention to detail, and finding beauty in unexpected places, much like the art of internal auditing.

As I continue my journey with IIA Singapore, I am reminded daily of the vital role internal auditors play in the business ecosystem. It is a path that consistently challenges and inspires, one that I am genuinely proud to be a part of. If you share a passion for uncovering hidden insights, problem-solving, and promoting integrity in the business world, consider exploring a career in internal audit. The field is not only multifaceted, combining elements of detection, consulting, and strategy, but it also offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on organisations.

If you are already in the field, I encourage you to contribute to the community, whether through volunteering, sharing your expertise in periodicals, or even by penning a blog for IIA Singapore. Sharing your unique perspective can inspire and guide others on their internal audit journey. Let's continue shaping the future of internal auditing together – join us in elevating impact!
