How Internal Audit Can Be Proactive in the Fight Against Fraud

IIA Singapore hosted a webinar titled "How Internal Audit Can Be Proactive in the Fight Against Fraud" on 25 July 2024. The session featured Melissa Aw Yong, a Certified Fraud Examiner, and saw the participation of over 220 professionals eager to enhance their skills in fraud prevention.

In today's climate, the threat of fraud poses significant risks to organisations, their supply chains, and their clients. Developing a positive culture of fraud awareness and prevention is imperative to mitigating these risks effectively. This webinar aimed to empower internal audit professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to champion fraud prevention efforts within their organisations. Melissa emphasised the importance of understanding our responsibilities under the Global Internal Audit Standards as the foundation for any fraud prevention strategy. Equipping internal auditors with the right knowledge and tools is the first step in the fight against fraud. She highlighted that internal auditors can play a proactive role by accessing anti-fraud resources, networking with other anti-fraud professionals, and building credibility through certification.

A key takeaway from the webinar was the necessity of fostering a culture of vigilance, education, and prevention within organisations. Continuous learning and staying ahead of potential fraud risks are essential components of this culture. Melissa also shared insights about the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and its contributions to the field of internal auditing.

As we move forward, it is crucial to strengthen our internal audit practices and build a robust defence against fraud. Let us continue to equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge and tools, and foster a culture of fraud awareness and prevention within our organisations.
