Sustainable AI Governance and Internal Audit
On 6 February 2025, IIA Singapore hosted a webinar titled "Sustainable AI Governance and Internal Audit", featuring Andeed Ma, President of the Risk and Insurance Management Association of Singapore. The session explored the role of internal audit in overseeing AI systems, particularly through the lens of the ISO/IEC 42001 framework.
Andeed discussed how internal auditors can leverage this framework to assess AI systems for bias, transparency, and accountability, ensuring the ethical deployment of AI technologies. He highlighted the parallels between AI governance and financial governance, emphasising the importance of professional scepticism in auditing AI systems, despite the technical complexities involved. A key takeaway was the need for internal auditors to develop new competencies in algorithmic auditing while working closely with IT departments and business units. This collaboration is essential to fostering a responsible AI culture that integrates seamlessly into organisational frameworks.
As AI continues to shape business operations, the strategic role of internal audit in providing assurance over AI systems is becoming increasingly crucial. This webinar reinforced the opportunity for internal auditors to lead in this transformative era, helping organisations navigate the complexities of AI implementation with integrity and purpose.
