InsightXchange: ESG In Focus

We hosted InsightXchange: ESG In Focus on 25 March 2026, bringing together internal audit and risk practitioners to exchange perspectives on the evolving ESG landscape and its implications for assurance.

The session featured Alexchandar Anbalagan, Chief Strategy Officer at TEASK, who shared practical insights on ESG assurance and strategy drawn from real-world experience. His reflections set the stage for a wider discussion on how organisations are responding to growing expectations around ESG reporting, governance and control maturity.

Participants engaged in facilitated peer discussions covering key areas such as ESG governance structures, data reliability, reporting practices, controls, and the evolving regulatory environment. The conversation focused on how these challenges are being addressed in practice across different organisations. Several themes emerged. One was the challenge of auditability, particularly where ESG metrics rely on non-financial or externally sourced data. Another was data ownership, with participants noting that clarity over where ESG data resides and who is accountable for its integrity remains a foundational issue for effective governance.

Control design was also discussed, with participants observing that while many organisations have established initial processes, these are often still evolving and may not yet be fully integrated into existing internal control frameworks. This has direct implications for assurance readiness, particularly as expectations from regulators and stakeholders continue to increase. Participants also discussed how current ESG reporting processes might hold up under reasonable assurance and where challenges could arise, especially around data, documentation and supporting evidence.

As ESG expectations continue to evolve, ongoing dialogue and shared learning among practitioners will remain important in helping organisations strengthen their approach and build greater clarity over time.
