Synopsis
The security of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models has become increasingly important as the use of AI models and systems expands in various industries. Third-party models, which are pre-trained models provided by external sources, are often used to reduce development time and costs.
However, these models may be vulnerable to embedded Trojans, which contain malicious triggers intended to deliberately misclassify the results to the attackers' choosing at a later stage. Depending on the use of the models, these can pose risks to downstream systems that rely on the accurate classification of the data (e.g. facial recognition used in authentication).
To mitigate this threat, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the model development process, including the origin and validation of third-party models, and to have a fundamental awareness of how and why such attacks happen. We will then explore the risks associated with embedded Trojans in third-party models and what can be done to test and mitigate against such emerging threats.

Gerry is an Executive Director in Deloitte’s Cyber Risk Advisory practice, specialising in Cybersecurity and Risk Management. He has over 25 years of experience in Cybersecurity advising clients on how to adopt technology innovations in a safe and controlled environment.
He runs the Cyber Emerging Tech which includes addressing risks arising from technology such as algorithmic decision-making (AI/Machine Learning). His other areas of specialisation cover building Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) programmes in both the IT and OT space to address the threat and regulatory landscape for private and public sectors. He also runs the Detect & Respond services to help clients address the proactive need to assess their technology environment and incident response where needed.
