Introducing SUSS Students to Internal Audit and Career Opportunities

What does an internal auditor do, and what can a career in internal audit offer? These were some of the questions explored during two sharing sessions with students at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) on 6 and 8 October 2026.

The sessions featured Cynthia Cheong, who drew on her experience in banking, technology risk and internal audit, and Lim Peng Wai and Aw Cheng Wei from UOB Group Audit, who shared their experiences of working in internal audit. Through their sharing, students gained a better understanding of how internal audit differs from external audit and the role it plays in helping organisations manage risks, strengthen processes and create value. The discussions also highlighted the range of experiences a career in internal audit can offer, from understanding business operations to working with people across different functions.

An interactive case study gave students a chance to consider situations from an internal auditor’s perspective. The discussions also touched on how Generative AI is changing the way auditors work, and the importance of skills such as critical thinking, curiosity and communication as the profession evolves.

Students also learnt more about IIA Singapore and its role in supporting the internal audit profession, including the benefits of free student membership and the upcoming third edition of the Internal Audit Case Study Competition, launching on 2 November 2026. The competition offers students a chance to apply their knowledge to practical scenarios and gain a better understanding of internal audit.
