Jumpstart Your Career in Internal Audit & Compliance

Experience gained in one field can open doors to another, and internal audit is one area where skills from different backgrounds can be put to good use. This was the focus of ‘Jumpstart Your Career in Internal Audit & Compliance’, held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic on 19 October 2026.

Organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic, with IIA Singapore, Foo Kon Tan and NTUC’s e2i as partners, the session introduced participants to career opportunities in internal audit and compliance. They learnt about the differences between internal and external audit, what makes a career in internal audit distinctive, and how experience in fields such as HR, IT and finance could be applied in these roles.

Sunita Kaur, Technical Director at IIA Singapore, shared how internal audit goes beyond checking processes and controls. By assessing risks, challenging assumptions, and providing independent insight, internal auditors help organisations spot gaps, strengthen decision-making and improve performance. This broader role makes internal audit an important part of how organisations manage risk and achieve their objectives. Darren Chin, Audit Partner at Foo Kon Tan, spoke about professional services in compliance and accounting, while Sunny Wong, Senior Lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Business & Accountancy, covered the skills and certifications employers value.

IIA Singapore’s Membership and Certification team was on hand at the booth area to speak with participants about membership and professional certifications, and how these could support their career development.

The session helped participants better understand the role of internal audit and compliance, the career paths available, and how they could draw on their existing skills and experience to explore new opportunities.
